The role of tendons is to permit attachment of muscles to bones, most of the time anchoring the tendon at the end of a muscle to the tough fibrous tissue that encases long bones, the periosteum. The “itis” in tendonitis refers to inflammation. It is useful to review some of the factors that contribute to tendon inflammation, and that will serve as a backdrop for understanding how to repair tendon weakness and inflammation. Tendon inflammation is often part of conditions such as Tennis Elbow.
Several other entries in the Healing by Design “conditions treated” section refer to the factors that cause tissue inflammation, and, of course, those same factors can cause tendon inflammation.
- Nutrient deficiency and body toxicity are probably the largest factors that can metabolically affect tendon strength. Various nutrients along with some specialized herbs are generally selected on an individual basis to support tendon and muscle healing.
- At the top of the hierarchy of tendon treatment “tools” is the use of a procedure called “origin-insertion technique.” That technique was developed a few decades ago by a man many consider to be the greatest chiropractic physician ever Dr. George Goodheart. Goodheart found empirically in clinical practice that tendons seem to attach to bones as if the junction between the two surfaces had Velcro on them. Honestly! (For a tendon and the muscle to which it is attached to have normal strength, the two surfaces have to be tightly connected. Injuries seem to pull these two surfaces apart and weaken joints.) By pressing firmly on a weakened tendonous insertion to the surface of bone with the correct vector, it is like pressing two sides of Velcro together. One holds position for several seconds, strength to the musculo-tendonous attachment is restored, and better joint functioning and muscle strength normally ensues. It is a simple procedure once mastered and astonishingly effective.
- Once tendon strength is reestablished, the reason for the “itis”, the inflammation, is removed.
- This type of therapy can be very helpful in the recovery of the many joint weaknesses we now see in sports: tennis and golfers elbow, wrist, and knee problems especially.
