Muscle spasms generally occur in the body because of pre-existing conditions of blocked circulation. There can be blocks in circulation of nerve flow, lymphatic drainage, blood flow, or flow of energy in the acupuncture meridian system. When any of these occur tissue is deprived of essential nutrition, and toxic metabolites from cellular function build up. These factors contribute to a biochemical and physical environment where muscle spasm can naturally occur. Deficiency of essential nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium can also contribute to muscle spasm, but is generally secondary to the circulation problems just mentioned.
At Healing by Design several measures are employed to help eliminate the tendency for muscle spasms. Proper chiropractic adjustments of the spine and skull can lead to remarkable normalization of circulation in the body. Adjustments to remove restrictions from connective tissue and fascia can be made with a device called a percussor developed by renowned osteopathic physician Robert Fulford. Nutrition is optimized, and dietary survey helps to identify possible nutrient deficiencies. Mineral supplementation is employed when indicated.
Restoration of proper blood and nerve supply to the extremities is probably the largest single measure that can be taken to eliminate muscle spasms with the exception of rather uncommon cases in which there is serious electrolyte deficiency and/or dehydration. Such deficiencies can occur with excessive and prolonged exercise.
